four chaplains solem ceremony
At its monthly membership meeting on February 28th , the American Legion Post 543
conducted its annual Four Chaplains Ceremony honoring the legacy and sacrifice of
four courageous military chaplains who selflessly gave their lives during World War II.
This solemn event was assisted by local clergy each representing one of the four
chaplain’s faith.
The Four Chaplain’s Ceremony commemorates the bravery of four military chaplains
from different faiths – Methodist, Jewish, Catholic, and Reformed Church in America –
who heroically sacrificed their lives to save other service members during the sinking of
the SS Dorchester on February 3, 1943. As the ship went down in the frigid waters of
the North Atlantic, these four chaplains remained steadfast, offering comfort, prayers,
and life jackets to fellow servicemen, regardless of their religion or background.
Lt. George Fox was honored by Post 543 Chaplain Charles Francka. Lt. Alexander
Goode was honored by Rabbi Bruce Templeman. Lt. Clark Poling was honored by
Reverend Carrie Evans of the Southport Presbyterian church and Lt. John Washington
was honored by Father Thanh Nguyen of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport.
“I am honored to participate in the Four Chaplains Ceremony, a profound reminder of
the selflessness and courage exhibited by these four chaplains,” said Reverend Evans.
Father Nguyen reflected that “Their actions exemplify the values of service, sacrifice,
and unity that are at the heart of America.” Rabbi Templeman, a US Army veteran, went
a step beyond and joined the Post 543 later that evening.
