District 9 Oratorical Scholarship Contest

On Saturday, 20 January, the district 9 American Legion U.S. Constitutional Speech
Contest was held at the St. James Community Center. This is the second step in
the American Legion’s National High School Scholarship Program contest. Valeria
Alvarado, a junior from North Brunswick High School, represented American
Legion Post 68 from Leland, NC and gave a speech entitled “Protecting America”
based on the U.S. Constitution. Connor Walls, a junior from South Brunswick High
School, spoke about “Regulation in American” as defined in the constitution.
Connor Walls placed first and was awarded a $1,000 scholarship while Valeria
Alvarado came in second and received a $750 Scholarship. Connor will now go on
to compete in the Division II contest to be held at the St. James Community
Center on Saturday, 24 February. The winner of the event will then
compete in the state contest in Cary, NC on March 23rd at the Westwood Baptist
Church.
