The story abouT
richard h. stewart, jr. American legion post 543
The Post’s formation was in part due to the Southport arrival of the American Flag that flew over the World Trade Center on 9-11-2001. The Flag was scheduled to go to Independence Hall in Philadelphia when local residents, Joan and Dick Stewart, armed with a copy of the State Port Pilot 4th of July insert, approached the Flag Foundation and convinced them to allow the flag to remain in Southport so it could be part of the local July 4th celebration.
Our Start
As a result of the overwhelming patriotism shown when the Flag was displayed in town, Post founders Don McGuire, Rick Sessa and 16 others decided to move forward and form a new post in the local area. After an exploratory meeting, a decision was made to apply for a temporary charter which was granted by the Department of North Carolina American Legion.
